Police Expand Quarantine as Manhunt for Killer of 16 People Continues

It's approaching 8:00 AM in the northeastern U.S. state of Maine, where yesterday evening a gunman carried out mass shootings in the small town of Lewiston.

Hundreds of police officers are conducting a manhunt to find the perpetrator, and several towns are under lockdown. If you're just joining us or need a recap, here's what's happening:

There are concerns that at least 16 people have died after an armed assailant attacked a restaurant (Schemengees Bar & Grille) and a bowling alley (Sparetime Recreation) in Lewiston, a small town in the state of Maine, on Wednesday evening. Several more people were injured and transported to local hospitals. A 40-year-old man named Robert Card has been identified as a person of interest, and the police have warned the public that he is "armed and dangerous." A "shelter-in-place" order is in effect in Lewiston and nearby towns of Auburn, Lisbon, and Bowdoin—residents of these towns and villages have been instructed not to leave their homes, schools are closed, and businesses cannot operate as usual. Eyewitnesses have shared their accounts of the shooting: one mother told local media that she shielded her 11-year-old daughter at Sparetime Recreation to protect her. We expect to hear more from the U.S. as people become aware of these events, so stay with us to stay updated on the latest developments.

"As soon as we heard the shots, we locked down" - Lewiston worker A man who worked at a foundry near Schemengees restaurant, one of the two known shooting locations, said he heard gunshots nearby.

Jeremy James spoke to local U.S. media near the hospital in Lewiston, Maine. James said that as soon as he heard the shots, he "immediately" locked down, secured the doors, and then went about shopping.

A friend of James said that his son had been shot but that "he's okay."
